Are Obesogens Making It Hard For You To Lose Unwanted Fat? Learn What to do to keep them sabotaging Your Weight Loss Goals
Let’s talk about Fat! What is in the fat you lose?
Interestingly enough, when you lose weight (or fat) there are actually substances in your fat known as obesogens (or endocrine disruptors) that actively interfere with the body’s functioning. They also:
• Alter fat balance & storage
• Change metabolic set point
• Disrupt energy balance
• Change appetite
• Promote weight gain
So, when you lose weight, the toxins in your fat may make it more difficult for you to continue to lose weight or even may make you re-gain the weight again! These toxins can be classified as environmental or lifestyle toxins.
Environmental toxins include: pesticides, industrial compounds, solvents, detergents, plasticizers, cosmetic additives, chemical additives, colorings, preservatives, flavorings, microbial toxins such as aflatoxins from peanuts, mycotoxins from moulds, and bisphenol A (BPA) found in plastic baby bottles, toys, and especially dental sealants
Lifestyle toxins include: Alcohol, OTC drugs, and prescription drugs. By-products from food preparation such as acrylamide from French fries, nitrosamines from cold cuts and sausages (processed meats), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PCAHs) from charbroiled meats, trans fats from partial hydrogenation of fats and AGEs (advanced glycosylated end products) in foods in which the glucose molecule is brought to high temperatures
How do obesogens affect your mental health?
Obesity is associated with a number of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and substance abuse. Obesity can also lead to chronic stress and negative self-image, which can create a cycle where these conditions feed off each other. For example, people with depression are more likely to become obese, and people who are obese are more likely to experience depression. So when it comes to obesogens affecting your mental health, it can most definitely make these symptoms worse.
Ok so… what can we do to stop the effects of obesogens?
First and foremost is to try your best to avoid these toxins as much as possible. It is impossible to avoid them all, but try your best to reduce your exposure to them in your daily life. There is a huge movement towards using more ‘natural’ products and while it is not always practical to do this with everything, even a small amount of change can make a big difference.
Secondly, its important to detox the body periodically to ensure that your body doesn’t get burdened with toxin overload. Keep in mind that a lot of the health products on the market like to promote how they help the body detox but they may not the support the body in BOTH phases of the detoxification process. If you didn’t know, there are 2 different phases associated with your body’s detoxing process: the 1st part is where the body breaks down the toxins and prepares them to be transported out of the body.
The 2nd part where the body actually flushes the toxins out of the body. The process takes longer than what most people assume so if you feel that taking detox tea for a few days will do the trick then you are mistaken. Failure to properly detox could result in your body having more free radicals roaming your body and making you feel worse than before you started the initial detox.
Exercise also helps the body release the stored toxins out of the body. Doing enough cardio that results in you sweating allows your body to release chemicals and toxins that may be trapped in the fat or subcutaneous layer of the skin.
